Biographical / Historical
Judith Linhares (1940- ) is a painter living and working in New York City. Linhares was born in Pasadena and raised in Southern California. She moved to Oakland in 1958 and attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, receiving her BFA in 1964 and her MFA in 1970.
Linhares was included in the 1978 exhibition at the New Museum, "Bad" Painting, curated by Marcia Tucker, and shortly thereafter relocated to New York. She is best known for her figurative paintings that explore psychology, feminism, gender, mythology, and narrative.
Linhares is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including three National Endowment for the Arts Grants and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. She has exhibited extensively in the United States.

Correspondence dates from 1973-2014 and is between Linhares and artists, gallerists, critics, friends, and family. Items include letters, postcards, holiday cards, invitations, and exhibition announcements. Exhibition announcements received by Linhares make up the bulk of the material, often with a personalized note from the artist. Scope and Contents
Writings and illustrated notebooks date from circa 1955-2000s and are by Linhares and others. Writings by Linhares include three illustrated notebooks, a transcript from a panel discussion she participated in at the New Museum, and a poem she published while still in high school. The illustrated notebooks contain sketches in pen and pastel, clippings, notes, recorded dreams, and scattered journal entries. Writings by others are a document compiled by early educators of Linhares' encouraging her to pursue her "vocation," and essays by Rhode Island School of Design students responding to a visit to Linhares' studio.
