The History of Smithsonian Chronology contains 2400 entries documenting significant events in the history of the Smithsonian Institution, from the life of James Smithson in the 1700s to the present. Events documented include new programs, buildings, exhibits, expeditions, expositions, important staff appointments, special events, and special acquisitions, etc. Each entry consists of an event title, date, abstract, bibliographic references, explanatory notes, and index terms. Entries were compiled from primary sources in the Smithsonian Institution Archives and secondary sources documenting the history of the Institution. To search the chronology only, select the combined keyword search screen and limit your search to the History of the Smithsonian Chronology. You may also limit your search to a specific event date range or sort by date, title of event, etc. To limit or sort your search using the browse indexes, select the browse search screen and use the limits or sort functions on the results screen.
