SIRIS | Smithsonian Institution Research Information System

Smithsonian Institutional History

The Smithsonian Board of Regents is a database with biographical information on the over 300 members of the Institution’s Board of Regents, from our founding in 1846 to the present. The Regents are the governing board of the Smithsonian Institution. Entries consist of names, titles, birth and death dates, occupations, tenures as a Regent, public law appointing them, special roles as a Regent, such as committees, type of Regent (Vice-President, Chief Justice, Senator, Congressman, or Citizen), the state they are from, biographical citations and sources of images. To search the Board of Regents only, select the combined keyword search screen and limit your search to the Smithsonian Board of Regents. You may also limit your search to a specific date range that regents were appointed or sort by date, name of regent, etc. To limit or sort your search using the browse indexes, select the browse search screen and use the limits or sort functions on the results screen.
