TEXT

Introduction: (Image: EEPA 1989-060590)
The second largest country in Africa, Mali is a landlocked nation in West Africa where the Sahara desert merges with the Inner Niger River Delta. Mali’s size and location make it extremely diverse culturally and geographically. These photographs from the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives portray the diversity of contemporary Mali over the past half-century.

Architecture: (Image: EEPA EECL 16310)
Approximately 90% of Malians are Muslim, and much of the architecture in Mali is mosques. Some of the most dramatic architecture was built by Dogon masons in an area called the Bandiagara Escarpment, where Dogon houses cling dramatically to high cliffs. Other unique structures in Mali include granaries, meeting-houses, and traditional shrines.

Clothing and Jewelry: (Image: EEPA EECL 2617)
Traditional jellabahs, flowing loose and cool down to the ankles, are still worn throughout Mali, especially in desert regions. Women often wrap a length of brightly patterned fabric, called pagnes, around their bodies. Today, traditional and modern clothing are intermixed, forming a unique Malian style. Gold jewelry, much of it created by the Peulh (also known as Fulani) peoples, sparkles over the bodies of Malian women.

Subsistence: (Image: EEPA EECL 10406)
The Niger River flows through the country serving as a lifeline to thousands of people who fish the river, farm and graze their animals on the delta, and who depend on the river and its tributaries for trade. The Niger River is just as important now to trade, communication, and subsistence as it was at the peak of Djenne and Timbuktu’s prosperity, more than 800 years ago.

Children: (Image: EEPA 1989-060202)
Children in Mali work hard to help their families. The children of nomads in the north usually remain in a base camp with their mothers to help farm, while the men leave to graze cattle or trade. Most Malian children attend school, do chores, play soccer, and have fun, much like children around the world.

Trade & Markets: (Image: EEPA EECL 8385)
Today’s salt trade across the Sahel via camel is still important to Malian inhabitants, though not nearly on the scale of the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai Kingdoms’ gold-salt trade which ended by the seventeenth century. Village and city markets range in size, but all sell a variety of foods, millet beers, traditional household items, and imported commodities such as t-shirts, plastic dishes, and videos.

Art in situ: (Image: EEPA EECL 6752)
Mali is renowned for its arts and crafts, including pottery, Dogon wood sculptures, Tuareg leatherwork, basketry, and textiles. Many works of art, such as Dogon wall paintings, represent complex mythologies.

Music & Masquerades: (Image: EEPA EECL 4419)
Music and masquerades serve important spiritual purposes in Mali, from celebrations to funerals, secular to sacred rituals, as well as bringing the community together. The kora, a 21-stringed lute-harp that is unique to the Manding culture, is played throughout Mali and often associated with griots, or storytellers.
