The archeological material was largely collected by Atreus Wanner with Henry Eckert Wanner contributing some specimens. For the most, the material came from York County, Pennsylvania, and some from the area of the city of York were described in an article "Relics of an Indian Hunting Ground," Smithsonian Annual Report, 1892, pages 555-570. Other specimens came from Lancaster, Berk, and Lebanon counties. According to the catalog, some of the material was found at a Susquehannock village site and other material is from a Conoy site. The larger part of the archeological collection was donated to the York County Historical Society.
The material was donated by Mrs. Martha H. Tanner through her nephew H. Henry Heintzelman.
