This 433-page ledger is leather-bound (deteriorating); each page is filled with hand-written entries recording sales of merchandise and payment receipts by customer name. This is apparently the daily account journal of a general hardware store (name, location, and recorder's name unknown). Sales amounts are recorded in the right column; receipts (both in cash and in kind) are recorded in left column.
