1957-01-10 - 1962-05-21
Scope and Contents
This series contains documents pertaining to the National Joint Computer Committee (NJCC). The first document describes the organization of the NJCC as of January 1957. The last deals with the dissolution of the NJCC in May 1962. The NJCC was composed of representatives from three organizations: the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Committee on Computing Devices of the American Institute of Electrical Enginmeers (AIEE), and the Professional Group on Electronic Computers of the Institute of Radio Engineers (PG EC of the IRE). Its chief function was the sponsorship of annual computer conferences, especially the Eastern and Western Joint Computer Conferences that had begun in 1951. The expanded successor to the NJCC was AFIPS.

Scope and Contents
This material pertains to the formation of the Military Computer Techniques Group and to related subsequent recommendations. The file is included, since the group may be considered a spin off from SHARE. According to Armer, the chairman of the Selection Committee charged with appointing the steering committee for the group, the purpose of the Military Computer Techniques Group was "to promote the interchange of information related to the application of general purpose computers in the United States defense effort, in particular the interchange of information which cannot flow through existing channels because of its military classification."
American Federation of Information Processing Societies
Series 4
Archival Resource Key
Scope and Contents
The series documents the American federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS) activities during the late sixties, when the donor, Paul Armer, served as Chairman of the AFIPS Committee on the Social Implications of Information Processing Technology, as Vice President, and as President of AFIPS. AFIPS (the American Federation of Information Processing Societies) was organized on 10 May 1961. The founding societies were the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Radio Engineers (later combined to form the IEEE), and the Association for Computing Machinery. Prior to the founding of AFIPS, members of its founding societies began in 1951 to sponsor the Eastern and Western Joint Computer Conferences through the National Joint Computer Committee. The founding of AFIPS was a response to the perceived need of expanding the functions of that Committee.
