Smithsonian Institution Archives, Accession 17-237, National Museum of American History. Division of Social History, Curatorial Records
This accession consists of records documenting curatorial activities in the Division of Social History and, prior to 1994, in the Division of Ceramics and Glass at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), and when the museum was known as the National Museum of History and Technology and the Museum of History and Technology, respectively. The records mostly pertain to the Hans Syz Collection of Meissen porcelain and the transfer of objects in that collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, and to Sotheby's for auction; as well as the potential transfer of objects to the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Emily B. Syz loan of objects to NMAH. Also documented, but unrelated to the Hans Syz Collection, are the activities of porcelain collector Ralph Henry Wark. Staff represented in these records include curators Paul Vickers Gardner, Susan H. Myers, and J. Jefferson Miller; and collections manager Sheila M. Alexander.
Materials include correspondence, memoranda, and notes; agreements; loan information; object lists; photographs; and newspaper clippings.
