Historical Note
On January 30, 1982, the National Museum of American History (NMAH) mounted FDR: The Intimate Presidency, a major exhibition recounting Roosevelt's relationship with
the American people through mass media, particularly radio broadcasting. The exhibition was created to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of Roosevelt's birth. Arthur
P. Molella, Curator of the Division of Electricity and Modern Physics, oversaw organization of the exhibition and was involved with research, catalog publication, and symposia.
When the exhibition closed on August 1, 1982, it toured under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
Descriptive Entry
Materials include correspondence and memoranda between Molella and historical societies, museums, and NMAH departments and divisions pertaining to the development of
the exhibition. Also included are exhibition scripts documenting the early political years of Roosevelt and his presidency, especially emphasizing his skillful use of radio
and the fireside chats during the 1930s and 1940s; exhibition blueprints and floor plans; research notes, particularly about the history of radio technology; exhibit proposals;
minutes of meetings; photocopies of articles on Roosevelt radio programs and New Deal-era murals; symposium literature; photographs; and newspaper clippings concerning exhibition
reviews.
