Smithsonian Institution Archives, Record Unit 7157, Frederick Kreutzfeldt Journal
Frederick Kreutzfeldt ( -1853) was a German botanist who accompanied John C. Fremont's survey of the 38th parallel, 1848, and Captain John W. Gunnison's 38th parallel expedition, 1853. Kreutzfeldt was killed in the massacre of the Gunnison party on October 26, 1853.
There are two copies of the journal: a handwritten German version and a contemporaneous handwritten English translation. In addition to the handwritten copies there is a typescript in English prepared from the handwritten English translation and an edited version of the typescript. The translations cover the period from June 18 to October 23, 1853, while the German version contains no entries later than October 12, 1853. Apparently none of these are the original journal.
