Smithsonian Institution Archives, Record Unit 7221, Bernard Rogan Ross Notebook
Bernard Rogan Ross (1827-1874) was chief trader for the Hudson's Bay Company in the Mackenzie River District of northwest Canada during the 1860s. In that position, he was able to lend substantial help to Robert Kennicott in his explorations in that area. Kennicott's activities provided a stimulus to Ross and other members of the Company, and Ross began to make collections of ethnological and natural history specimens, many of which he sent to the Smithsonian.
This notebook contains catalogs and lists of collections made by Bernard Rogan Ross for the Smithsonian Institution, the Royal Industrial Museum of Scotland, and the Geological Museum of Canada. It also contains ethnological notes, especially on the Tinneh Indians, and copies of some of Ross' outgoing correspondence.
