This accession consists of one reel of 16mm color film, and is a print of a 1971 television show, "CBS News Presents a Smithsonian Adventure: Search for the Goddess of Love," produced by CBS News in association with the Smithsonian Institution. The host of the program is Walter Schirra, the American astronaut, and the film depicts Schirra going to the island of Knidos to report on the excavation of archaeologist Iris Cornelia Love. Love was trying to locate the original statue of Aphrodite carved by the Greek sculptor Praxiteles. Many copies of the sculpture were made over the years, but the original was lost. The program is about an hour long, and was produced by Isaac Kleinerman, written by Earle Luby, directed by Peter Poor, and edited by Maurice Murad. The Smithsonian Coordinator for the film was Frederic M. Philips, then Director of the Office of Public Affairs.
